The Intake of Niaspan & Cholesterol Levels

Niaspan belongs to a group of drugs that are called lipid metabolism regulators. These medications are often used in order treat high cholesterol levels. That’s because they function by reducing the production of cholesterol in a patient’s body. This medication can help to lower it and increase the so-called goo cholesterol. There are many health care practitioners who advise to use Niaspan in a certain combination with the right diet plan and regular exercises. All these simple steps also help to decrease cholesterol levels. Doctors say: “The intake of Niaspan should not be a substitute for exercises and healthy nutrition.”

In essence, it is a specific cholesterol drug that is produced by Abbott Laboratories. There are many medical professionals who prescribe it to their patients these days in order to increase the levels o good cholesterol and lower their bad one. However, there are different contradictory facts that raise certain doubts about this type of practice. Recently, AIM-HIGH has claimed that the intake of Niaspan failed to prevent some heart attacks and slightly raised a risk of having a stroke, especially when combined with another cholesterol medication called Zocor.

Besides, there are many doctors who have an opinion that different statins, such as Lipitor, Simvastin and Crestor, are perfect when it is needed to decrease the levels of bad cholesterol. Thus, there is no need for patients to use any other drug. The Times: “There is a new study that gives medical professionals another reason not to add Niaspan in order to raise good cholesterol levels. This fact can be quite concerning for the future development of this drug in the modern HDL field.”

“There are many clinical trials and tests related to the intake of this drug that can offer positive evidence. It means that the data provided by AIM-HIGH deserves to be analyzed. There should be more scrutiny to support these conclusions. That’s because there are many trials and studies that can prove that the usage of Niaspan demonstrates the reduction of heart attacks. So, we need to be sure that these conclusions are well-founded and firm.”

In conclusion, AIM-HIGH has found that adding Niaspan to other statin treatment plans can’t decrease unwanted cardiovascular events in 32 months in more than 3000 people. There was some unexplained and small increase in stoke rates as well. That’s why the decision to stop these trials was made. There are further plans to research this drug.
